Accidental deaths often increase over holiday weekends

This past weekend, in observance of Civic Holiday, many residents enjoyed an extra day tacked onto their weekend. While the way in which the additional day was utilized by residents varied, many likely enjoyed the time off and returned to their regular schedule on Tuesday, refreshed and ready for the rest of the week. For 16 others however, the activities they engaged in resulted in their death.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, the recent Civic Day long weekend is one of the deadliest in recent history. Authorities indicate that people died both on the road as well as on the water.

Those killed in the road accidents included vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, a pedestrian and a cyclist. On the water, one individual died following the capsizing of a canoe and six others drowned. Those who died over the weekend ranged from youths to a 61 year old.

Though the specifics surrounding each incident are not clear, it is believed that many of the deaths could have been prevented. When an accident could be prevented it is possible that the negligence of another person could be to blame for it occurring in the first place. The negligence could take many forms. For example, in the case of the incidents involving motor vehicles, impaired driving, speeding or distracted driving could be to blame.

Investigations into the various deaths are undoubtedly being conducted. If it is found that negligence on the part of another party is to blame for any of fatal incidents, family members of those individuals could take legal action.
