What is an Acquired Brain Injury?

An acquired brain injury is any injury that exists within the brain that a person was not born with. It can result from many different situations, such as oxygen deprivation, substance abuse, and personal injuries.

When dealing with personal injuries, brain injuries can range from minor bumps and bruises, to more serious situations such as concussions or acquired brain injuries. As posted on the Canada website, there are two types of acquired brain injuries.

The first type, known as non-traumatic acquired brain injury, is caused by something inside the body, such as taking drugs or having a stroke. The second kind is known as traumatic acquired brain injury. This can be caused by a slip and fall, a motor vehicle accident, or another type of accident that is caused outside of the body. In this situation, the brain is injured due to a blow or bump to the head of some kind.

Damage to the brain through either experience can have the same results. Physically, you may suffer from speech impediments, sleep and fatigue problems, seizures, vision problems and other physical issues (balance, nausea, etc.). You may also suffer from cognitive damages as well. You may have difficulty understanding things, be unable to communicate yourself or have other mental issues such as problems with memory or states of confusion).

If you are suffering from an acquired brain injury caused by a personal injury, it's best advised to speak to an experienced personal injury lawyer. He or she will be able to help you identify what your needs are, and what forms of compensation you can pursue to have those needs met.
