Despite the greatest care, snow and ice will cause car accidents

Ontario winters are known to cause hazardous road conditions. However, car accidents can be prevented by taking a few precautions. Snowstorms in Ontario can be severe, and the best protection might be to stay off the roads during such storms and only drive when it cannot be avoided. It may take longer to reach a destination when travelling in inclement weather, so drivers must make sure they are well rested before taking to the roads.

A vehicle that is in good shape could improve the chances of arriving safely. All fluids must be topped up, and windshield wipers must be in excellent condition. Appropriate snow tires can save lives of the occupants of a car while it can prevent sliding and becoming a hazard to other road users. Compliance with winter tire rules can save lives.

Combinations of ice and heavy snow can make roads treacherous, and allowing sufficient following distances is vital. It is important for drivers to avoid the temptation to speed and allow pedestrians extra time to cross the slippery roads. Being prepared for the unexpected may prevent one from becoming stranded without any emergency supplies, which can be deadly. A driver would be wise to take along supplies such as a first-aid kit, blanket, jumper cables, small shovel, flashlight, flares, candles and matches along with snacks that are nonperishable and a phone charger. The need to use it might not arise, but being prepared can provide peace of mind.

While staying safe on dangerous Ontario roads this winter might be the priority of all drivers, accidents happen, and for those who are injured, there will be financial consequences. Recovery of losses may be pursued if car accidents were caused by the negligence of other parties. However, establishing such negligence could be challenging and might be best accomplished by the skills of an experienced personal injury lawyer.
