Car accidents: 6 injured in Mississauga

Six people were seriously hurt following an accident on the Queen Elizabeth Way, according to sources. Ontario Provincial Police, who often provide support to local officers for car accidents, were on the scene with Peel Regional paramedics. They say four children and two adults were injured. So far, no charges have been filed against anyone involved.

Paramedics responded to the crash around 10:45 a.m. The details of how the accident occurred are still not clear, but police say one tractor-trailer and at least four passenger cars were involved. The crash was severe enough to cause the closure of the entire highway for over five hours. Paramedics on the scene say they transported three children and two adults to local hospitals, all of them suffering from injuries described as not life-threatening.

However, Ontario's air ambulance service also reported airlifting a 12-year-old boy to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. His injuries were described as critical. The current conditions of all the injured parties is unknown. Police have not publicly suggested a cause for the accident, but they have not ruled out negligence, recklessness or even intoxication at this time.

Car accidents involving multiple vehicles can take a long time to investigate. If Ontario police determine that one or more of the involved drivers contributed in a material way to the crash, they may choose to file criminal charges against those individuals. However, even if no criminal charges are filed, it may still be possible for the injured parties or their legal guardians to file personal injury suits in a civil court setting. Such suits often use police evidence to bolster their claims, which must be based upon evidence of negligence by the party or parties deemed to have been at fault.
