Man hospitalized with injuries after bricks fall on him

No matter how much caution a person exercises, it is impossible to avoid a hazard one cannot see or anticipate. Citizens of Ontario can only trust that property owners take all reasonable precautions to keep their premises as safe as possible. A man suffered serious injuries outside a Toronto restaurant recently, in what could be a premises liability case.

On May 17, part of a building collapsed on Danforth Avenue near Main Street. The building houses a restaurant, and has a front patio where patrons can dine. Approximately 100 bricks fell from the building, sending pedestrians scurrying for cover.

One man suffered injuries during the collapse, which also destroyed an awning on the building. The victim was struck on the head, and paramedics attended to his injuries. There were patrons inside the restaurant at the time, but none were injured, though everyone evacuated as a precaution. The entire area was closed to traffic as crews worked to clear the debris.

The victim was fortunate to avoid more serious injuries, though a head injury may grow worse over time. Should it turn out that the collapse was due to negligence on the part of the property owner, the victim will have every right to pursue compensation through the Ontario courts for his monetary damages, including pain and suffering. When someone is injured due to the negligence of another party, it's best to consult an attorney to know one's legal rights and what steps may be necessary in order to protect one's rights for the future.
