Car accidents: two dead in Burlington crash

A single-vehicle accident has claimed two lives on the Burlington Skyway. Ontario Provincial Police, responsible for investigating car accidents of this nature, are still in the process of reconstructing the fatal crash that killed the driver and a passenger. The identities of these two individuals have not been released pending notification of their next-of-kin.

The accident report is incomplete at this time, but it has been confirmed that the vehicle appears to have struck a guard rail before flipping over just after 5 a.m. on Eastport Drive. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. Attempts to release those trapped in the vehicle failed, and both parties were killed in the blaze.

Police are still determining whether there were further injuries or deaths associated with this crash, as the destruction was widespread, and the vehicle appears to have been travelling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. The official causes of death have not been released at this time, and police have not ruled out recklessness, negligence or even intoxication as possible causes for the crash. Their investigation caused the shutdown of Eastport Drive for several hours.

In car accidents where the driver deemed materially responsible is also killed, criminal charges are not applied posthumously. However, Ontario law will allow the family of the deceased passenger to file a wrongful death suit against the driver's estate and anyone else with ownership interest in the involved vehicle. The option is also available to use police evidence to support such a case in civil court.
