Perth police have charged a 31-year-old man after a crash in Perth East sent seven people to a local hospital. Ontario Provincial Police, who often work with local police in investigating car accidents, reported the accident around 2:00 p.m. the afternoon of Feb. 20. The man now faces charges of failure to yield to traffic on a through highway.
According to the accident report, the crash took place in an intersection and involved an ambulance and a car carrying five people. The patient being transported in the ambulance thankfully did not suffer significant injuries, but the other two people in the ambulance and four in the car were taken to a local hospital to be assessed. Of those, two from the car were rushed to London in critical care.
The other two occupants of the passenger car are being listed as in stable condition at the time of this report. The two paramedics in the ambulance, despite being injured themselves, stayed on scene for as long as possible treating the other injuries. There is no word on the status of the driver of the car, who is believed responsible for the accident.
If he is found guilty of the charges against him, he could face jail time, loss of his license and/or fines. As with many car accidents causing injury, however, Ontario law allows the injured individuals to take further action against him. This would take the form of personal injury suits filed in a civil court. It is also possible to make use of police evidence to support such civil cases if they are filed.
