Car accidents: 5 hurt in Toronto crash

Police are actively looking for the driver of a vehicle who reportedly fled the scene of an accident on the Gardiner Expressway that injured five people. Ontario authorities, who have already seen several car accidents since the beginning of the year, have reason to believe that vehicle could have played a role in the crash. For the moment, none of the other drivers involved in the three-car pileup have been charged.

According to the investigation, a 76-year-old man headed eastbound on the Gardiner struck another eastbound vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man around 12:10 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 3. One passenger in the struck car, a 24-year-old male, suffered critical injuries described as life threatening and was rushed to a local trauma center. Two others, a man in his 20s and a woman believed to be 18, both suffered serious injuries as well.

Two other individuals were taken in for moderate injuries. Police now believe a third vehicle may have been involved, but that the driver fled the scene. They have asked for the support of any witnesses in locating this vehicle, which is said to have front-end damage.

The driver who left will likely face charges of fleeing the scene, which is common in car accidents of this type. However, that does not necessarily mean they will be found responsible for causing the crash. Even if no one is criminally charged for causing the accident, Ontario law still allows for the injured parties to file personal injury suits against one or more drivers, depending on how much evidence is gathered to support such a claim.
