Car accidents: 3 injured, 2 dead in northwest Ontario

Provincial police are still investigating a devastating two-vehicle crash outside of Massey that claimed two lives. Ontario Provincial Police tend to have jurisdiction on the country's northwestern highways and are typically responsible for investigating car accidents of this type. At the moment, they have not come to any concrete conclusions as to the cause of this crash.

The report says the accident took place just before midnight on the night of Dec. 6, on Highway 17 near Espanola. Apparently, a van veered into the oncoming lane before colliding head-on with a car headed in  opposite direction. At the moment, it is unclear what caused the driver of the van to make this unsafe move.

Two people riding in the car were killed in the initial impact, and two others in the same vehicle were rushed to local hospitals with injuries described as serious. The driver of the van was also badly hurt in the crash. It is unclear whether the driver of the car survived the accident, or whether that person was counted among the deceased. Police are not releasing the names of the victims, pending notification of family.

In car accidents like this one, many factors can play a role. Ontario police have not ruled out intoxication, recklessness or negligence as possible causes for the van driver to enter oncoming traffic. If it is proven that driver is materially responsible for the crash, he or she could face criminal charges. Separately, the families of the deceased as well as the surviving injured would be entitled under provincial law to file for wrongful death and/or personal injury in a civil court setting.
