Wrongful death suit possible after serious Thanksgiving crash

Three people are dead after a severe head-on crash in Brampton, according to police. Ontario authorities are still investigating the accident that claimed the lives of a 24-year-old man and two women aged 22 and 16 on Thanksgiving. Police believe the driver responsible for the crash may have been street racing, suggesting that both criminal charges and wrongful death lawsuits could be forthcoming.

The accident report filed by Peel Regional Police says the 24-year-old man was driving his vehicle with his girlfriend and her younger sister when the accident occurred. A sports vehicle headed the opposite direction apparently drove over the median into oncoming traffic, striking the man's vehicle head on. Police say the sports car was travelling at "an extremely high rate of speed" when the accident occurred.

Police believe the 49-year-old driver of the sports car, who was also killed in the impact, may have been street racing, as evidenced by video showing a second vehicle travelling alongside him at a similar rate of speed. Police are now on the lookout for this second driver. They hope interviewing this driver might shed further light on this terrible tragedy.

If it is confirmed the older driver was indeed racing at the time of the crash, the families of the deceased may have the opportunity to seek justice. Under Ontario law, the families are entitled to file wrongful death suits in civil court against the driver's estate. If the second alleged racer is found, that individual might also be the target of both civil suits and criminal charges.
