Car accidents: Man dies in Pickering, Ontario

Police are still in the process of determining what caused a crash in Pickering that killed a 54-year-old man. Ontario authorities responsible for the investigation of car accidents are working with Durham Regional Police to identify the cause of the crash that claimed one life and sent several other people to the hospital. So far, no charges have been filed in this accident.

The accident report states that four vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred the night of Oct. 25. Authorities report that the initial accident involved a collision between a pickup truck and a car. Reportedly, three other vehicles, all of which were also travelling northbound, became involved in the accident as well.

It is unclear at this time which of the two drivers was responsible for the initial impact, but it has been confirmed that the 54-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A passenger from that vehicle, as well as the driver of the pickup truck, was rushed to local hospitals with injuries described as serious. Their current conditions are unknown.

Car accidents of this type often require an extended investigation to assess fault. In this case, Ontario authorities will have to determine which of the two drivers contributed materially to the accident. If the deceased driver is found to have been at fault, the surviving individuals are entitled under provincial law to file personal injury lawsuits against that driver's estate. If the surviving driver was at fault, the deceased driver's family could also file a wrongful death suit in civil court.
