Family sues for wrongful death after Ontario car accident

A family torn apart by tragedy is seeking legal recourse against the person responsible, according to local sources. A tragic car accident in September 2015 led to the deaths of three children and their grandfather at the hands of a drunk driver. The driver, who pleaded guilty in Ontario court to the charges filed against him, is now facing multiple wrongful death suits filed by the family.

According to the report, the family was travelling in Vaughan in their minivan when a 29-year-old driver, who police say was drunk at the time, ran a stop sign and plowed into their vehicle. Two boys aged 9 and 5 and a girl aged 2 were all killed on impact, as was their 65-year-old grandfather. The children's grandmother and great-grandmother were also injured in the crash.

The driver was found guilty of two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm and four counts of impaired driving causing death. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, the family is still seeking further legal recourse in the form of civil suits that allege the driver was well aware of the danger he posed when he got behind the wheel, but chose to ignore it. The case has not been heard as of this report.

A drunk driving accident is already a tragic event, mostly due to its preventable nature. In this case, even though the driver was subjected to the harshest criminal sentence in Ontario history for his crime, the family does not feel this is justice enough. Their wrongful death suits will draw upon the evidence gathered by police that indicate the man's intoxicated state at the time of the crash.
