A hit-and-run accident is being investigated by York Regional Police after a man was killed near Highway 7 and Keele late on Aug. 8. Ontario police forces are searching for the driver who they believe left the scene. Hit-and-run car accidents are often cause for criminal charges, but until police catch up with the driver, none will be filed in absentia.
Police say a 35-year-old man who may have been on foot was in the area of Hwy. 7 and Keele when he was struck by a vehicle. His injuries were severe, and he was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead, with the cause of death being consistent with the bodily trauma associated with a car impact.
Officers are still searching for the driver, who apparently fled the scene of the accident. They have not yet released a description of the driver or the vehicle involved in the crash, but they have asked for public support in bringing the driver to justice. Once they locate the driver responsible, it seems likely they will press criminal charges against that individual.
Even if Ontario police do not file formal charges against the driver, the injured man is still entitled under provincial law to file a personal injury claim against that driver in a civil court setting. Such suits, when related to car accidents, do not require that criminal charges are filed or that a conviction is won. However, they do require evidence that the driver contributed materially to the accident.
