Could traffic light reduce crashes on stretch of road?

There are multiple things that could lead to a car accident occurring. It is possible the design of a road could be dangerous and contribute to the risk of an accident. Residents of the west end of Toronto believe this may be the case for a stretch of road in the area.

Last month a deadly accident occurred on Jane Street between Bloor Street and Ardagh Street when a vehicle crashed into a house early one morning, killing one occupant of the vehicle and seriously injuring another. According to area residents, vehicles often travel that particular stretch of the road at a high rate of speed. Though it has two lighted crosswalks, there are no traffic lights.

In hopes that it might slow drivers down, area residents would like traffic light to be added. The installation of a traffic light is easier said than done. At a minimum, 12 months of planning and research go into making such a decision.

While stoplights may help to control traffic, drivers must do their part to keep area roads safe, including watching their speed. In the case of the most recent crash, local police are looking into whether other factors—such as alcohol—played a role as well.
