Tips for dog owners for preventing dog bites

For many people who live in Ontario, pets that are dogs are considered a part of the family. Unfortunately, while many of these animals are loving, loyal animals, under certain circumstances they can become aggressive with those around them. When a dog attacks and bites a human, the injuries inflicted can be serious and leave a person severely injured. While this can happen to anyone, the outcome can be particularly bad when the victim is a child.

Fortunately, there are things that dog owners can do to try to prevent these situations from occurring.

The first thing is to select a breed that is not aggressive. Speaking to a veterinarian or individuals from the humane society or SPCA, may be beneficial in guiding you toward a dog that fulfills your needs.

Second, it is important to make sure that the dog you get is trained. Here again, speaking with your veterinarian about behaviour concerns you might have is a good idea. Spaying or neutering your dog could help with these concerns. So too could socializing your dog properly and seeking obedience training.

Kids who are exposed to dogs need to know how to act. When chased, yelled at, teased or even fought with in a playful manner, seemingly friendly dogs could become territorial and attack the child.

When a dog owner fails to take steps to keep their dog from hurting others it is possible that the injured individuals, or in the case of children, their parents, can take legal action against the owner of the animal. While this course of action cannot undo the harm that was inflicted, it could make dealing with the injuries easier.
