Child dies after fall from Toronto high-rise window

Whenever a fatal accident occurs it is sad. It is even more upsetting when the life that is lost is that of a child. Sadly this recently happened in Toronto. A 4-year-old boy died after falling from a window in a high-rise apartment, 15 stories up. Before the tragic incident, the boy, who did not live in the building and was just visiting, was playing with other children.

In an effort to prevent people at the high-rise building from opening the windows too wide, safety locks and window-restrictors had been installed. Since they were installed in the building two years ago, despite being difficult to get off, the president of the building’s tenants association indicated that many tenants have removed them, some in hopes of cooling the apartments in warm weather.

While it is unclear whether window-restrictors were being used on the window from which the boy fell, following the incident, building inspectors employed by building management were disbursed to check for the devices.

There is nothing that can make up for the loss of a loved one. When, however, a life is lost as a result of negligence on the part of another party, it is possible that legal action might be taken against that party. Though not a replacement for the loss of a life, the financial compensation recovered in a successful case could be beneficial to those left behind, who must move on with their lives. It is unclear whether such a claim will be filed in this case.
