Ontario tractor-trailer accident kills 2, injures 1

An accident involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle resulted in the deaths of two people in Ontario on Feb. 3. Residents who live in the area questioned contractors' efforts to maintain the highway where the accident occurred, though police were still working to determine the cause of the accident at the time of reporting.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. on Highway 401 near the intersection of Boundary Road in Cornwall. A vehicle carrying at least two people was travelling in an eastbound lane of the highway when it collided with a tractor-trailer driven by a 47-year-old Brampton man.

The 54-year-old Cornwall man who was driving the passenger vehicle died at the scene of the accident, according to an Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson. A passenger in that vehicle, a 22-year-old Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Quebec man, suffered critical injuries and later died at Cornwall Community Hospital after hospital staff attempted to revive him.

OPP closed a stretch of eastbound Highway 40 for more than six hours while investigators processed the crash site. One local man said that winter maintenance efforts, such as spreading sand or grit on Highway 401, seemed to have diminished since 2013. He noted that the area where the accident occurred might be susceptible to accumulating moisture, presenting a possible hazard in temperatures below -18 degrees, when salt becomes less effective in deicing roads. The temperature in Cornwall at the time of the accident was -20 degrees, and sand or grit may have been necessary to provide traction.

Families who suspect their loved ones' fatal car accidents resulted from poor maintenance of roadways sometimes consider seeking compensation from municipal governments. However, if the crash was caused because of a driver's decision to drive recklessly in inclement weather, that individual might be named as a defendant in a civil lawsuit.
