Woman facing criminal charges in fatal car accident

Deputies with the Ontario County Sheriff's Office charged a Seneca woman for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs in a fatal accident that occurred in the town on Dec. 31. The accident, which killed a Clifton man, occurred at the intersection of County Road 20 and County Road 4 around 2:00 p.m.

Officers reported that the 51-year-old woman allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign while travelling south on County Road 20. Upon entering the intersection, the woman's vehicle struck a pickup truck being driven east on County Road 4 by the 70-year-old man.

According to reports, the victim was unconscious when police arrived. He was transported for treatment to Geneva General Hospital but succumbed to internal injuries. The woman, who complained of chest and neck pains, was also transported to the hospital. After being treated, she was arrested for driving while impaired by drugs. Following the accident, the intersection was closed for about two hours while investigators completed a crash reconstruction. Officers then said that the case is under review by the district attorney for the possible filing of more charges.

When a person is killed in a car crash due to the actions of an impaired or negligent driver, the family of the victim may consider filing a tort claim against the driver. By doing so, the family may be able to recover damages for the losses that they sustained as a result of their loved one's death. Recoverable damages may include monetary compensation for funeral and burial expenses as well as lost expected income.
