Car accidents: 2 dead in Haliburton County

A paramedic from Toronto and his romantic partner were both killed in a tragic crash in Haliburton County on the afternoon of July 15. Ontario Provincial Police, who typically head up investigations into fatal car accidents on provincial highways, have not filed charges against the driver of a vehicle they say crashed into a group of motorcyclists. The highway has since been reopened in the wake of an hours-long police investigation.

The accident report is incomplete at this time, but it has been confirmed that a vehicle driven by an unknown person was headed eastbound on Highway 118 around 5 p.m. For reasons that have not been identified, the vehicle crossed the center line into westbound traffic, where it struck a group of four motorcycles headed the opposite direction. Three other motorcycles avoided the crash.

A 27-year veteran of the Toronto Paramedic Services was killed outright, along with his partner who was riding with him. Two other people who have not been publicly identified also suffered life-threatening injuries. The condition of the driver of the eastbound vehicle was not made public either. Police say they are unsure whether criminal charges will be filed at this point in their investigation.

Fatal car accidents are a significant problem on Ontario highways. In this case, it appears there may be precedent for police to file criminal charges against the driver involved in the crash, but even if they do not, the families of the deceased victims will have legal recourse available to them. Wrongful death lawsuits filed in civil court could result in damages being awarded to the families to compensate for their tragic losses.
