Car accidents: woman dead following crash in Ontario

One woman is dead and the other is in recovery after they were both struck by a car in North York. Car accidents involving pedestrians prove fatal tragically often, but Ontario authorities were on the scene to provide support to the victims. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time, but the investigation is currently ongoing.

The accident took place around 9:51 a.m. the morning of May 31 when two 18-year-old women were attempting to cross Bayview Avenue in North York. A woman driving southbound reportedly struck both women. When authorities arrived, one of the two women was judged to be in life-threatening condition, while the other's injuries were less serious. Both were rushed to local hospitals.

The more badly injured woman was pronounced dead of her injuries sometime later, while the other woman continues to recover. The woman driving the vehicle involved stayed at the site of the accident and has not yet been charged. However, police have reached out to the community and asked for eyewitnesses to please contact Crimestoppers, or to contact Toronto police directly.

Even if no criminal charges are filed in this case, like all car accidents in Ontario resulting in injury or death, the law provides alternative options to the victims and their families. In this case, the family of the deceased woman and the seriously injured woman who survived would be entitled to file wrongful death and personal injury suits, respectively, against the driver. However, proof of the driver's negligence, together with a finding that it caused or significantly contributed to the accident, would be necessary in order for the civil court to rule that the driver is financially responsible for monetary damages.
