Car accidents: 1 dead, 2 injured in Mississauga

One man is dead and two other people are in the hospital following a serious crash during rush hour in Mississauga on June 14. Ontario authorities based in Peel Region typically conduct investigations into car accidents of this type, particularly when a fatality has occurred. For the moment, no one has been charged with a crime.

According to the accident report, a driver experienced some kind of medical incident, causing the vehicle to accelerate rapidly, thereby striking several other cars. The accident took place around 5:15 p.m. in the Gorway Drive/Dorcas Street intersection. One car caught fire, trapping the driver and passenger inside.

The passenger, a 46-year-old man from Brampton, was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The two drivers were also hospitalized for minor injuries. They have not been publicly identified by police. It is as yet unknown whether Peel Regional police will pursue charges against the driver who appears to have precipitated the accident.

In Ontario car accidents where a driver experiences a medical emergency of some description, it is sometimes more difficult to assign blame. Could the medical incident have been foreseen? Was it the result of improper medication or failure to observe the limitations of a medical condition on the part of the driver? If it can be documented that the driver should have taken more precautions or was in some other way materially responsible for the accident, criminal charges could be filed. Separately, injured parties or the families of the deceased are entitled to file civil suits against the party/parties believed responsible in civil court.
