Hit and run car accidents are frustrating for victims

All needless motor vehicle accidents are unfortunate events. Hit-and-run car accidents, however, have an extra layer of frustration added, thanks to the cowardice of the fleeing driver. A vanishingly small percentage of hit-and-run drivers may be unaware they have caused an accident, but in most cases, the offending motorist is attempting to escape responsibility to the victims. A recent example comes from the streets of Ontario's biggest city.

The accident happened on April 23, at around 8:45 p.m. Two people riding a motorcycle northbound on Yonge Street in Toronto were hit by a pickup truck making a left turn from the southbound lanes on to Erskine Avenue. The driver of the truck left the scene, but Toronto Police believe they found the truck the next day. The driver has yet to be located.

The motorcycle riders, a 56-year-old man, and a 16 year-old girl were found lying in the road suffering from serious injuries. Emergency workers took them both to hospital. Both were expected to survive the ordeal, though the girl's injuries were considered life-threatening.

As a cop on the scene said, the driver of the truck had a responsibility to stay and help the victims, but chose instead to leave them "on the road to fend for themselves." Hit-and-run car accidents in Ontario are terrible crimes, and the victims deserve compensation for their misfortune and mistreatment. If you, a friend or a family member are a victim of someone's negligence, it makes sense to contact a personal injury attorney to learn what steps should be taken to protect one's legal rights.
