Car accidents: Brampton man faces charges

A 23-year-old man is facing serious charges following the accident that saw his $300,000 supercar reduced to a crushed wreck. Brampton, Ontario, police officers do not usually see car accidents involving vehicles of this caliber, but they were on the scene to witness what happens when a McLaren Spider slams into a hydro transformer at high speed. The driver faces charges and could also face a lawsuit from an injured passenger.

According to the police report, the accident took place the night of March 9. Regional police reported the vehicle appeared to have been traveling at a very high rate of speed when the driver lost control, forcing the car to leave the road. The vehicle struck a hydro transformer, totally destroying the vehicle and the transformer alike. Police later reported that some nine homes were left without power as a result of the collision.

A 47-year-old male passenger in the vehicle sustained injuries to his lower body described as serious. He was rushed to a local hospital. The driver escaped relatively unscathed but now faces several charges, including impaired driving causing bodily harm. There is no word regarding a trial date at this time.

Ontario law does not suffer drunk driving car accidents lightly. If found guilty, the driver could be facing a loss of his license, fines and even jail time. Separately, the injured passenger is also entitled by law to file a personal injury lawsuit against him in a civil court. The court offers the option for the passenger to use police evidence pointing to material contribution to the accident in such a suit in order to convince the court to award damages.
