Car accidents: 2 children hurt in North York

Tragedy struck North York on the morning of March 4 when two young boys were struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a street. Car accidents causing injury are always thoroughly investigated by Ontario authorities, and the same is true of this case. Thankfully the driver involved is cooperating with the investigation, but this will not preclude that individual from possible criminal charges.

According to police representation, twin 9-year-old boys were in the process of crossing Sheppard Avenue West around 10 a.m. when an eastbound minivan reportedly struck both boys. The driver of the minivan, who has not been publicly identified by police, was reportedly driving in the curb lane at the time of the crash. It also appears the boys were in a crosswalk when they were struck.

Both boys were badly hurt in the crash, with one suffering life-threatening injuries and the other in serious condition. The driver remained on the scene until police arrived. Officers are now investigating the possibility that the crash might have been caused by driver error, speed or pedestrian error. They have not yet reached any conclusions.

Car accidents involving children are always tragic, which is why Ontario law is so stringent when it comes to proper operation of a motor vehicle. Should police determine the driver was traveling too fast, or was distracted or otherwise negligent in the operation of his or her vehicle, that individual could face criminal charges. Separately, the parents of the boys are entitled under provincial law to file personal injury suits against the driver in civil court, on behalf of their minor children.
