Car accidents: Woman injured in police chase in Ontario

The Special Investigations Unit is still investigating a crash that injured an innocent bystander during a minor police chase in Toronto. Ontario units specializing in car accidents are on the case, which saw a 57-year-old woman hurt on the afternoon of Feb. 5. So far, charges do not appear to have been filed.

The accident report is still incomplete as of this writing, but it has been confirmed that Toronto police attempted to pull over a vehicle around 1:30 p.m. The driver of the vehicle apparently chose to flee the scene by car. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle struck another car. A passenger in that vehicle was injured.

The extent of her injuries has not been made clear, but she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. It is unknown if the driver of the fleeing vehicle was subsequently arrested, but it appears likely that individual would be taken into custody for fleeing police officers and causing the accident. Police are in the process of reaching out to the community for more information, entreating anyone who witnessed or has video footage of the accident to come forward and help with the investigation.

Regardless what the outcome of the Ontario police investigation will be, car accidents involving a police chase are fairly clear-cut in terms of provincial law. It seems likely the driver of the fleeing vehicle will face criminal charges, but even if he or she does not, the injured woman is in a position to file a personal injury lawsuit in civil court. Such a claim may rely upon evidence gathered as part of the investigation in order to bolster the case.
