What is a property owner's duty of care during winter conditions?

A recent article underscores the importance of taking extra precautions during the winter months, whether as a pedestrian, a driver or a property owner. The article described the effects of an ice jam on the Malheur River and its impact on the outer neighborhoods of Ontario. Due to the blockage, water levels were rising and the National Weather Service issued a flood advisory in the Payette area. 

Ontario crash may lead to wrongful death suit

A 26-year-old man accused of causing a serious car accident in November has asked for a new lawyer, according to court sources. The Ontario man appeared in a Kitchener court on January 6 to face accusations of drunk driving causing death. It is not yet clear whether the family of the victim will pursue a wrongful death suit in addition to the criminal charges. 

Car accidents: 3 injured in Ontario crash

A two-car collision on the morning of Dec. 23 has sent one young man to a local hospital, according to police. Ontario Provincial Police, who are responsible for responding to car accidents, reported to the scene around 8:00 a.m. So far, they have not filed charges against either driver involved in the crash, but they have asked the support of the community in determining with more clarity what caused the crash. 

Wrongful death possible in cyclist fatality

A man is dead after a collision in Brampton, according to local news sources. Ontario police responded to the accident around 7 a.m. the morning of Dec. 12. While both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with police, neither has been charged with a crime as of this report. Even if no charges are filed, the deceased man's family may still choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit in connection with this tragedy. 

Car accidents: 5 hurt in Toronto crash

Police are actively looking for the driver of a vehicle who reportedly fled the scene of an accident on the Gardiner Expressway that injured five people. Ontario authorities, who have already seen several car accidents since the beginning of the year, have reason to believe that vehicle could have played a role in the crash. For the moment, none of the other drivers involved in the three-car pileup have been charged.

A woman is dead and several other people, including a young child, have been seriously injured in a car crash in Brampton. Ontario authorities responsible for car accidents responded to the crash on the morning of Dec. 5. Peel Regional Police have not filed charges against any of the drivers involved in the accident at this time.
