Car accidents: Ontario man facing charges

Two young teenagers believed to be siblings are in critical condition following a serious accident on Halloween night. Understandably, the potential for car accidents to occur tends to go up on a night where young children are out in numbers on the streets of Ontario, but in this case, the fault appears to lie squarely with the driver involved in the crash. Police are continuing to investigate, but they have filed criminal charges.

The accident report states that three teenagers, believed to be 13 years old, were on a sidewalk in Toronto around 8:30 p.m. when an SUV driven by a 44-year-old man reportedly rear-ended a car driven by a 35-year-old man. The force of the impact caused the SUV to leave the road and strike the group of teens on the sidewalk. One boy escaped with minor injuries, but the siblings were rushed to Sick Kids Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV now stands charged with criminal negligence and dangerous driving. The driver of the car is also facing charges for allegedly being drunk at the time of the accident, even though his vehicle did not strike the children. Neither individual has been assigned a court date as of this report.

Car accidents causing injuries are always stringently investigated by Ontario authorities. If they determine the SUV driver was materially responsible for the crash, he could face jail time. Even if prosecutors do not gain a conviction, however, the families representing the injured children are entitled to file personal injury suits against the driver in a civil court.
