Car accidents: 94-year-old woman dies in Ontario

A person of interest in an existing murder investigation is now under further scrutiny after a crash that killed a 94-year-old woman the morning of Nov. 7, according to police. Ontario's Special Investigation Unit, which is always involved in investigations pertaining to fatal car accidents, is currently reviewing the case. So far, police have not announced formal charges against the driver, though it is confirmed that he was taken into custody.

The trouble began when police visually recognized the driver of a black car as being wanted for an alleged stabbing. An officer attempted to stop the car, but the driver pulled away rapidly. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle struck a blue car with two occupants in an intersection.

The driver of the blue car was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, including broken bones. The passenger, a 94-year-old woman, was also taken to a hospital for critical injuries, but she later succumbed and was pronounced dead. The driver of the black car was arrested on the scene and was immediately taken into custody, as he was reportedly uninjured. No court date has been set for the driver at this time.

It seems clear the driver will face charges of some description for attempting to evade police. However, car accidents where fault can be allocated also fall under the jurisdiction of Ontario law, so he may face further charges for his role in the crash. In addition, the family of the deceased woman and the injured driver are entitled to file wrongful death and personal injury suits against the driver separate from criminal charges he may face.
