Car accidents: 1 dead following Ontario crash

One person is dead and two others are injured following a rollover crash in Markham. Single-car accidents are more likely to have been caused by driver error than accidents involving more than one vehicle and therefore must be investigated carefully. Ontario authorities are in the process of determining what caused this accident but have yet to come to any solid conclusions.

According to the accident report, around 3:10 a.m. the morning of Nov. 18, an SUV driven by a woman in her 20s apparently rolled over at an intersection in Markham. While there was fog present in the area, York Regional Police have not determined whether the inclement weather was a factor in the crash. There were three people in the vehicle, including the driver, at the time of the crash.

One of those three women was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The other two women were rushed to local trauma centres for treatment. The condition of the two surviving occupants of the vehicle are unknown at this time. Police have confirmed that the major collision team is in the process of investigating the cause of the crash as of this report.

While inclement weather plays a role in many car accidents, it is often not the only factor. Ontario authorities will need to determine whether the woman was driving in a manner consistent with the weather conditions. If she survived the accident and is deemed materially responsible, she could face criminal charges. Even if the driver was killed, the injured parties may still be able to file personal injury suits in civil court against her estate. Those claims are not conditioned on the filing of any criminal charges.
