Man accused of drunk driving in Toronto

A man police believe may have been drunk behind the wheel during a Labour Day crash is up on charges, according to authorities. Ontario police arrested the man after he was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Fatal car accidents, particularly those where drunk driving is a suspected factor, are always thoroughly investigated by police.

According to the accident report, the 24-year-old man was driving north on Mount Pleasant Road traveling at high speed around 2:30 a.m. the morning of Sept. 5. Apparently, the man lost control of his vehicle, causing it to strike a lamp post. A 28-year-old man who was a passenger in the car at the time was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The driver and two other passengers were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not believed to place their lives in danger. The driver now faces charges of criminal negligence, dangerous driving and impaired driving -- all causing death. The deceased man has not been publicly identified by police pending notification of family members.

Depending on the outcome of the criminal trial, the driver may face serious jail time in connection with this crash. Drunk driving car accidents are typically handled seriously by Ontario courts. Even if he somehow escapes a conviction, however, the family of the deceased man and his injured passengers will all be entitled to file civil lawsuits against him, including wrongful death and personal injury claims. If enough evidence exists that he was negligent in his operation of the vehicle, monetary damages could be awarded by the court.
