Car accidents: 3 hurt in Ontario crash

Three people were sent to hospitals in York Region following a car crash in Richmond Hill, according to local sources. Ontario police responsible for responding to car accidents arrived on the scene just after 6:30 a.m. the morning of July 20. So far, police have not filed charges against any of the drivers involved in the five-vehicle pileup.

Details about the accident are sparse at the time of this report, but it has been confirmed that the accident occurred at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Leslie Street. Police have also confirmed their investigation is likely to take some time, given the preponderance of evidence at the scene. Police initially believed several children were hurt in the crash when they discovered booster seats at the scene, but they later confirmed no children were present.

Of the individuals involved, two female drivers were taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The driver of a pickup truck was discovered at the scene with no vital signs but was successfully revived. He is currently in critical condition at a local hospital. Police have asked for the support of any witnesses to the crash in helping to determine exactly what happened.

In car accidents in which no immediate cause is clear, it can take Ontario authorities time to sort out the specifics of the crash and file charges. However, even if no charges are filed, if one or more drivers are determined to have materially contributed to the accident, provincial law allows other injured parties to file personal injury suits against that person or persons. While a criminal conviction is unnecessary for filing such a suit, evidence of culpability is necessary for the suit to be successful.
