Ministry of Labour seeks to reduce work deaths due to falls

In virtually any job there are things that are pros and cons. Depending on the occupation, the cons could translate into safety issues. For example, where construction jobs are concerned, falls could be an issue. In an effort to keep these incidents to a minimum, this summer, the Ministry of Labour is launching a program designed to try to reduce the number of such incidents that occur.

Inspectors will be sent out to employers to make sure that practices, programs and policies that prevent falls are in place. Among other things, inspectors will determine whether employers are making sure:

  • Workers are safe on trailers, truck beds and on the top of loads
  • Equipment is maintained
  • Platforms, mobile stands and ladders are assessed for hazards high up
  • When necessary, guardrails or other safety barriers are installed
  • Workers are trained on safety devices when working

There is good reason for this enforcement. In 2015, falls claimed the lives of 18. Eight of those fatalities occurred in industrial workplaces and another 10 workers were killed on construction sites. No one expects to die at work and the loss of a worker is devastating, particularly when he or she has a family that relies upon them.
