Fire at Toronto apartment leads to death of 4 senior residents

It is never easy to lose a loved one unexpectedly. It is that much harder to face when it may have been prevented. This may have been the case in the death of several residents of a Toronto apartment building, in a fire, last month. Though not designated as a senior home, the Toronto Community Housing building specifically catered to individuals over the age of 58.

Distracted driving cause of the most road deaths in Ontario

This past week the Ontario Provincial Police waged the distracted driver campaign it engages in every year. According to the OPP, there are multiple activities that if engaged in while driving, could be considered distracted driving.  These include talking on the phone, texting, tending to kids in the back seat, self-grooming and eating, while operating a vehicle. Some studies have found that the danger associated with these activities is the same as driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Canadian study does not support use of side guards on trucks

In earlier posts we have written about pedestrian accidents and the devastating injuries they can inflict upon a person who is struck by a car or truck. One post, which focused on issues that if addressed might reduce the number of such accidents that occur, provided a tip geared specifically at heavy trucks. It was suggested that making side guards on trucks mandatory, could keep both pedestrians, as well as bicyclists, safe from falling under the wheels of a truck, where they could be crushed.
