Bus crashes near Quebec border; many injured

Almost two dozen passengers were injured in a recent double-decker Megabus crash in Lancaster. Near the Quebec border, the Megabus allegedly crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Highway 401 on its route from Montreal to Toronto.

Of the approximately 45 passengers travelling on the Megabus when the crash occurred, four were transported to hospitals with serious injuries and 19 more with injuries considered to be minor. The driver and another woman were pinned in their seats.

According to an Ontario Provincial Police Sgt., one woman was taken from the crash scene via helicopter while firefighters and paramedics treated some of the injured the the crash site.

Uninjured passengers caught a shuttle to a Williamstown arena before heading back to Montreal or continuing on to Toronto later that night. Most had to proceed without their luggage left on the wrecked bus.

After the initial impact, the bus wound up against some roadside trees.

The director of corporate affairs for the bus company would only confirm that an accident occurred. In an email sent to The Canadian Press, he stated the following:

"Megabus can confirm that one of our vehicles...was involved in an incident. Safety is our No. 1 priority and Megabus is fully co-operating with the authorities."

Following the wreck, westbound lanes of 401 east of Cornwall were closed for nearly three hours.

Police continue to investigate the accident. It was unknown whether the driver became ill, fell asleep or was otherwise impaired behind the wheel. A distracted driver can be every bit as much of a danger behind the wheel as one who is impaired.

In order to recover the cost of medical treatment, those injured in wrecks caused by other at-fault drivers may have to turn to the Ontario courts for relief.
